For anyone wondering how to lucid dream, the best basic advice is contained in about five building blocks. They are: Preparation, Recollection, Annotation, Familiarization, and Awareness. Preparation for lucid dreaming involves analyzing your motivations and emotions. The subconscious with its thoughts and feelings and belief systems are the stuff that dreams are made of. To become lucid in a dream, you must believe in the concept of lucidity, and have a plan to deal with it. In my very first lucid dream, I was lucid for a grand total of probably 3 seconds. I was so excited about knowing I was dreaming that I woke up before doing anything interesting. Have a plan for how to lucid dream before you go to sleep. Recollection is the second key to learning how to lucid dream. The best tip for recollection is to remember in detail. Remember how things made you feel, how they looked, what the “plot” of the dream was, and who or what you were in it. Another thing that helps tremendously when learning how to lucid dream is keeping a dream journal. A dream journal allows you to capture your thoughts and prompts you to remember things you might not otherwise if you weren’t writing about it. In addition, become aware of the way you dream. Learn to recognize the subtle differences in waking reality and dreaming. Awareness is another very important part of recognizing when you are in a dream, if something just doesn’t make any sense, there’s a good chance you’re dreaming. If you try to read something and it doesn’t make any sense or the words keep changing, or gravity is not working according to the rules of waking reality, there’s an even better chance you’re dreaming. Induce Lucid Dreams

To induce lucid dreams, dreamers must be in the correct mind state. It takes practice to consistently and deeply experience lucid dreams. There are a whole host of different methods and tips, and many of them are very good. I have always believed that the best plans are those that make something complicated simple. The following are some of the most simple and effective tips to induce lucid dreams.

First is the preparation to induce a lucid dream. An effective tool for preparation is affirmations. Write out a list of things you would like to experience in your dream and the beliefs you will carry with you. Repeat these throughout the day and immediately throughout the day. After a while this will no longer be necessary, but it is a great tool to induce lucid dreams for the beginner.

Dream retention is very important to learning to induce lucid dreams; you should keep a journal within arm’s reach of your bed to write everything down immediately upon waking. Make sure to recall your role in the dream, your beliefs in the dream, the way things looked, the settings, and the characters. Over time, you will develop better dream recall and recognize similarities in the way you dream.

Learn to recognize dreams for what they are. The fastest of the many lucid dream/ reality tests is the common sense test. If something just doesn’t make sense there’s a good chance you’re dreaming. If the laws of physics no longer apply to you or all the characters behave exactly as you expect them to, there’s a very good chance you’re dreaming.

Lucid dreaming literature is a great way to learn more about how to induce lucid dreams. There are also machines designed to help dreamers induce lucid dream with auditory and visual stimuli during REM sleep. What is a Lucid Dream

What is a Lucid Dream? A lucid dream is simply a dream in which you actively participate, knowing that you are in fact dreaming. A Dutch psychiatrist named Frederick van Eeden was the first to coin the term “lucid dreaming”. The most common methods to induce a lucid dream are the dream initiated lucid dream and the wake initiated lucid dream. A dream initiated lucid dream is achieved by falling asleep and relying on practiced recall and conditioning techniques to achieve lucidity. These dreams often are more random, as the dreamer is becomes lucid in an existing setting rather than creating his or her own dream setting. In the wake initiated lucid dream or WILD, the dreamer uses relaxation and meditation techniques to draw himself into a lucid dream.
Celia Green wrote the first book analyzing lucid dreams, making scientific ground as she credited lucid dreaming with REM sleep as well as false awakenings. From a neurological perspective, J. Allan Hobson, discovered that a dreamer becomes lucid as his dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activates recognizing that the dreamers current reality is a dream. The dreamer must stay calm enough not to wake up while focused enough to maintain the awareness that he or she is dreaming. The pons and parieto-occipital junctions maintain the lucidity until the dreamer awakes.

Dream Control Part 2

A great way to control your dreams and stay lucid in a dream is to rub your hands together. This sensation helps to stabilize the dream. It’s not just rubbing your hands together, it’s any sort of touch that you can see as well as feel that helps bring your dream into clearer focus with better control.

The following are two last resorts if you should find your dream breaking up-spinning and falling. Spinning is just like it sounds, you twirl around at medium speed so that you are fully in control but not going so fast that you wake yourself up. The other technique is falling backwards, again not out of control so as to end up waking up, but concentrating on the next dreamscape you want to “land” in.

Control Your Dreams

Everyone experienced in lucid dreaming remembers those first few dreams where you realize your dreaming, freak out, and try to do something crazy before you wake up. This quite natural as lucid dreaming is a very fun and exciting thing, but learning how to manage your excitement in a dream is a very important part of learning how to lucid dream. Dream stabilization is the ability to control your state as soon as you become lucid in a dream.

As I’ve said before, the beliefs that you carry into a dream affect your ability to lucid dream. When you first become lucid, believe that you will have enough time to do all the things you want. After all, don’t dreams seem to last for ages sometimes? Don’t run around doing stuff, just calm yourself and take time to think. From a place of focus, you will better be able to plan and control your dream properly.

Among the most potent techniques is anchoring. This allows you to press the pause button on your dreams and really take control.

The first anchoring technique is looking at your hands. Take as long as necessary and examine your hands; the veins that run between the bones, the hairs along the back. Tell yourself and believe that you are the author of this dream and it will go for as long or as short as you decide. Don’t rush this, this step is meant to slow you down.

Another great tool are verbal commands. As you are looking at your hands and they become blurry, simply order the dream to “Improve Detail” and you will see them more clearly. This is helpful in two ways; it demonstrates your own control of the dream and it teaches you to control your dreams, strengthening your belief in your abilities.

These techniques are to be used any time the dream becomes blurry.

How to Lucid Dream – Recall Your Dreams

Dream Recollection

Recollection is truly one of the most essential facets of lucid dreaming. Even though you may experience a magnificent lucid dream, what’s the point if you can’t recall it? That’s why it is advised that dream remembrance be a top consideration for any inexperienced in lucid dreaming.

Dream Journaling.

Just like everything else mental, the more you use something, the more neuro-connections the brain creates to it. Therefore by being focused on recollecting your dreams and applying this, you can expect to elevate your dream recall. This works with regular retention too, the more often you take advantage of it, the more effective it gets.

When you are journaling, make an effort to not just write down themes and plots, but minor specifics too. The more elements you are able to recollect every time, the better your recall will eventually become.

Middle of the Night
If you wake up during the nighttime for any reason, it is recommended that you simply write just a few phrases on paper before getting back to sleep. Regardless if when you wake up, you may have basically no memory of your past dreams, viewing a handful of notes will draw those memories forwards and enable you to write them out in elevated detail.

Dream Indications.

Quite a few dreams include matching themes, physical objects, or people. You can actually make use of this to aid in recollection of of dreams. Diet and Supplements.

Intense dreams are dreams that are easier to recall. There are various chemicals that allow you to have more vivid dreams. B6 is probably the most commonly used one, however others are effective too.

Longer REM periods also help produce more vivid dreams therefore any chemical that works as a REM suppressant (like a sleeping pill) will make vivid and easier to recall dreams. It is suggested that you use sleeping aids that are melatonin based as they are more natural.

Tension.

Stress kills dream recall. When you have had a stressful day and wish to remember your dream the next morning it is advisable to find a way to soothe that stress. Do what works for you.

How to Lucid Dream – Understanding What a Dream Is

Before we can seek to control dreams, we must understand what they are. And so, we delve into the elements that create a dream. The human mind, in its infinite complexity, creates dreams a great deal more complicated than we generally associate with dreams. Though science still has yet to come up with a real reason why we dream, here is the best guess of the scientific community.

A common belief of dreams is that they are “residue” from the day, as your mind decides what was important enough to store as a permanent memory. The makeup of our dreams is often composed of associations that our brains make between objects and elements within the dream. The changes in these associations are what accounts for the radical changes in dreams that go unnoticed until you recall how strange and illogical it was.

EEG mapping has shown that during dreaming, the part of the brain responsible for logic powers off. This is why psychologists believe that dreams are the realm of the id, that psychological component comprised of emotion and primal urges.

How To Lucid Dream – Dream Induced Lucid Dreams

Likely the first type of lucid dream you’ll experience while learning how to lucid dream is the DILD or Dream Induced Lucid Dream. These dreams occur somewhat randomly as there is little preparation involved. A Dream Induced Lucid Dream is best induced by constantly questioning whether or not you are in a dream, and disciplined practice of reality tests.

Lucid Dream Supplements are quite helpful for DILD’s as they increase the likelihood of becoming lucid substantially. The MILD technique is pretty much the only other thing that helps with these.

How to Lucid Dream – Dream Exit Initiated Lucid Dreams

Next in the “How to Lucid Dream” series is the DEILD otherwise known as the Dream Exit Initiated Lucid Dream, also known as Dream Chaining. This is a very powerful technique because, if done correctly, a lucid dream is almost assured.

This technique is a natural occurrence in the progression of learning how to lucid dream, but it was Dr. Stephen Laberge who first codified and explored this technique fully.

Dream Recall is very important if you want to learn how to lucid dream via the DEILD method as it is dream recall that helps you realize when one dream is over.

When you boil it down the key to this lucid dream technique is conditioning. Your mind must be used to waking up when a dream is ended. This isn’t hard as people usually wake up anyway but because of poor dream recall, don’t remember the dream.

The DEILD is done simply by lying perfectly still when you awake from a dream and keeping your eyes shut. Since you are already likely in a REM cycle and in sleep paralysis, you have eliminated a lot of the work to induce a lucid dream and you may simply use mnemonics to induce a lucid dream or recall your last dream and reenter it.

This is one of my favorite techniques and is very simple to implement.  Staying perfectly still after waking isn’t easy but, once you learn how to lucid dream with this technique you can have consecutive lucid dreams in minutes!

WILDs or Wake Induced Lucid Dreams are lucid dreams in which the dreamer goes directly from a conscious state into a dream. The theory surrounding the ability to lucid dream in this way is that being motionless for so long tricks the body into believing it is asleep. At this point, the body and brain disconnect in what is known as “sleep paralysis.” The brain proceeds from consciousness into REM sleep where it’s possible to induce lucid dreams.
If you would like to learn how to lucid dream this way, it is important to remember the time frames that best suit Wake Induced Lucid Dreams. The best times are during the night in a REM cycle or through napping in daytime. For a Wake Induced Lucid Dream in the night, you need to set your alarm clock to wake you up in the middle of a REM cycle. REM cycles tend to take place after about six hours so plan accordingly. You may find you are a little stiff from six hours of sleep, you should stretch out as any tightness will detract from your ability to relax and induce lucid dreaming through meditation.
The first step to a Wake Induced Lucid Dream is to switch focus from external to internal. Lay in the way you normally do to fall asleep as this will put you in a position you will be most familiar and comfortable in. As your body falls asleep you will likely experience some sounds and colors known as hypnagogic hallucinations. You should remain calm as this means you are at the edge of the dream state. Allowing yourself to become excited will result in an uncomfortable jolt back into full consciousness. Allow yourself to be drawn into a dream and create the world you want. It is at this point that you must maintain control and consciously build your dream.

How to Stay Lucid in Dreams

When you’re dreaming do you ever find yourself saying, “Is this a dream?” If so, you’re probably going to want to read on if you want to experience lucidity for more than just a few seconds. When I first started learning how to lucid dream, this was a difficulty for me. The first and most readily apparent way of maintaining lucidity is to stay calm. If you get excited you’ll start to feel your heartbeat and wake up. If you become lucid, simply go with the dream. Struggling will hurt lucidity as you’ll find yourself drifting out of the dream towards wakefulness. Among the most helpful techniques for staying lucid in a dream is rubbing your hands together. It prevents you from returning to a waking state by engaging your mind. Also, you can spin your body. Hopefully, these methods will enable you to better learn how to lucid dream and maintain lucidity.

Teeth Falling Out in Dreams

One of the more interesting dreams is the tooth loss dream. They general indicate that a dreamer has some insecurity, usually attached to self image.  They mean that you worry about what others think of you. This is not a steadfast rule; you have to analyze the dream. If the dream has you spitting out teeth, it may be fear of sickness not opinions that troubles your mind.

This dream has been observed countless times in 40 year old women who face some insecurity about their appearance as they get older. It has been seen in men as well who have fears of impotence.

Another interpretation of the dream is the need for change. This is rooted in the subconscious remembrance of childhood and infancy and the role of teething and losing teeth at different points of important growth.

Broken teeth often indicate betrayal or broken promises, while gaps can indicate allowing yourself to be deceived.

As you are analyzing your dreams, take special care to note the emotions and beliefs that were involved in the dream; it lends perspective to the context of the teeth falling out.

How to Fly in a Lucid Dream

Flying dreams are some of the most sought after dreams. They are generally some of the first dreams any lucid dreamer aspires to when he or she gets the hang of lucidity. The first step for those who would like to induce lucid dreams in which they can fly, is to settle their intent. With a clear knowledge of why they would like to fly, they must then motivate themselves and set about making the mind believe their dream is possible.

Before you go to bed, you should use mnemonic induction to suggest to yourself that you will fly in your dream. Visualize yourself floating in the air. Experience the emotion and exhilaration of flying. Begin by running and bounding, allowing yourself to go higher and higher.

From the interpretive side, lucid dreams where the dreamer can fly represent freedom, and the ability to soar over objects within a dream represents the transcendence of fears in life. Flying takes a low level of lucidity and can be accomplished relatively simply.
